Academies
BCSLS encourages its members to become involved in their society. We support the creation of regional academies that provide accessible and relevant educational and other benefits to members. There may be up to twelve designated academies in the following areas:

  • Vancouver
  • Fraser Valley
  • Interior
  • Okanagan
  • Northern Interior
  • Lower Vancouver Island
  • West Kootenay
  • Peace River Liard
  • North West
  • East Kootenay
  • North Shore

Each academy must be approved by the BCSLS Board, be governed by its bylaws and abide by its rules, regulations and policies. An approved academy elects is own officers and conducts is own business. There must be a minimum of five active members willing to hold office in each academy.

Academy members must be members in good standing of BCSLS. An academy may set its own additional membership fees as long as they do not exceed those of BCSLS. Academies may organize events, seek sponsorships and raise funds to be used regionally. Academies may apply for Dr. Phil Reid Bursary education grants and may be eligible for other assistance at the discretion of the Board.

Academies report regularly to the MLT Director at Large on their activities and finances. If an academy ceases to be active, its remaining funds revert to BCSLS to be held until the academy is reactivated.

Currently, active academies include:

  • North West
  • West Kootenay
  • Okanagan

If you are interested in forming or reactiving an academy contact our Executive Director for more information.
